Cumberland funder awards scholarships

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Cumberland Community Foundation awarded 68 scholarships totaling $222,500 to students during its annual Scholarship Awards Reception in May.

Ranging from $500 to $5,000, most of the scholarships are based on students' financial needs, with some given in consideration of special skills or interest areas.

Scholarship recipients are selected by volunteer committees made up of retired educators.

The foundation's newest scholarship is the Steven R. Elrod Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of Steven R. Elrod, who served in the Army and died in Iraq a year ago.

The scholarship will benefit students at Massey Hill Classical High School, Elrod's alma mater.

The Cumberland Community Foundation is based in Fayetteville and manages more than 400 individual funds totaling almost $40 million.
