Lenovo, Triangle funder celebrate Olympics

DURHAM, N.C. - Personal-computer manufacturer Lenovo is counting down to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with a global online philanthropic campaign.

Bidding in a new Lenovo auction will begin in a different country each week leading up to the summer Olympics.

Each auction will feature a limited-edition notebook personal computer, inspired by this year's Olympic torch, which Lenovo designed. Many of the computers will be autographed by athletes, the company says.

Proceeds from the auctions will go to the Lenovo Hope Fund at Triangle Community Foundation to support initiatives in microfinance, small- and medium-enterprise development and children's sports around the world.

The first auction kicked off February 8 in the United Kingdom, and the company plans to auction 36 computers in total, with 12 up for grabs in the final week.

Additional auctions will take place in Japan, Australia, France, Russia, the U.S., Hong Kong, Argentina, China, India, Brazil and Canada.
