Emergency-relief fund launched

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Launched with a $1 million gift from the Leon Levine Foundation, Foundation For the Carolinas has created a new fund to aid people hurt by the global economic crisis.

The Critical Need Response Fund will be used to help residents of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and is a partnership of Foundation for the Carolinas, the Levine Foundation, Mecklenburg Ministries, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Central Carolinas.

Funds will be awarded by a task force of volunteer leaders co-chaired by Amy Woods Brinkley, a global risk executive for Bank of America, and Harry Jones, Mecklenburg county manager.

All donations to the fund will go directly to serve people in need; administrative fees will be waived.

To date, the fund has awarded a total of $400,000 in grants:

• Crisis Assistance Ministry -- $100,000
• Loaves & Fishes -- $100,000
• Second Harvest Food Bank -- $100,000
• United Family Services -- $50,000
• Jewish Family Services -- $50,000
