MCNC gets $28.2 million for broadband

RALEIGH, N.C. - With $28.2 million in federal stimulus funding, MCNC plans to extend broadband access into 37 southeastern and western North Carolina counties.

Over the next three years, MCNC, a Raleigh-based nonprofit that uses advanced networking technologies to improve education in the state, will oversee the construction of 480 miles of new fiber, allowing broadband access by school, universities, libraries, hospitals and other vital community organizations.

The money come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Broadband Recovery Funds, which are administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

MCNC raised an additional $11.7 million in matching dollars, bringing the total investment in the effort to $40 million.

"Increased broadband access for underserved areas is a critical infrastructure improvement that will help businesses of all sizes create jobs," Gov. Bev Perdue says in a statement.
