GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Over 400 community leaders are expected
to get together on Nov. 23 to honor excellence in giving and fundraising in the
region.
Sponsored by the NC Triad Chapter of the Association of
Fundraising Professionals, the region's 17th Annual National
Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon will be held at noon at the Grandover Resort
in Greensboro and feature awards in 10 categories that will go to 13
individuals and organizations.
With the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina
Foundation serving as gold sponsor, the event will feature as keynote speaker
Charlie Engle, who moved from a life of drugs and alcohol to become a top
athlete, inspirational speaker and philanthropist.
Receiving the chapter's Lifetime Achievement Award will be
Ann Stone Hanes of Winston-Salem, who has given 44 years of service at nonprofit
boards and handled key fundraising roles, including chairing a $75 million capital
campaign at Salem Academy and College.
Other winners include:
Outstanding Fundraising Professional -- Vicki
Sheppard, vice president for institutional advancement at Salem Academy and
College, and Paul Russ, director of resource development at Hospice and
Palliative Care of Greensboro. Sheppard raised final $25 million in $75 million
capital campaign since 2006, while Russ coordinates Hospice's $9 million
endowment fund and, as director of marketing and development at Family Serivce
of the Piedmont, coordinated $3.4 million capital campaign.
Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer - Barbara
MacKay Vinson, Greensboro; Leah Price and Peggy Shufelt, High Point; and Sandy
McCutchan, Winston-Salem. Vinson, as president and founder of the MacKay
Foundation, raised over $850,000 for research at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center; Price and Shufelt launched a tennis tournament over nine year
ago that has raised nearly $300,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters; and McCutchan
chairs the Forsyth County CROP Hunger Walk, which raised over $65,000 in 2008.
Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation - Lincoln
Financial Group, Greensboro, which purchased Jefferson Pilot in 2005 and has
upheld the company's "level of excellence in corporate philanthropy."
Outstanding Philanthropic Individuals - Vic and
Roddy Flow, Winston-Salem, who have supported numerous charitable
organizations, including Wake Forest University, Meals on Wheels and Senior Services
Inc.
Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation - Kulynych
Family Foundation II Inc., Wilkesboro, which has supported numerous charities,
including Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Kulynych Family Life
Center, Tiffany's Place Teen Center.
Outstanding Philanthropic Youth - Hanna McRae
Young of Kernersville, who as a high-school freshman formed CheeReaders, which
has grown to national nonprofit that teams cheerleaders in 40 states who read
to young students.
Outstanding Fundraising Youth Group -- Brian
Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive, Winston-Salem, student group at Wake Forest
University that has raised over $1 million for Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Outstanding Faith-based Organization - First
Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, which for 22 years has supported Habitat for
Humanity of Greensboro
Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Group - The
Guild of Family Service of Greensboro Foundation, which since 1995 has
supported Family Service in Greensboro through volunteerism, fundraising and
advocacy.
