Job Description:

The Moravian Ministries Foundation in America (MMFA) is seeking an individual to serve as President/CEO.He or she will provide overall leadership and general supervision for the daily operations of the foundation including strategic direction, program development, operations, financial management, personnel management, and external/community relations.

The Community and Foundation

The Moravian Ministries Foundation in America, formed in 1997 and based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, supports the work and ministries of the Moravian Church in America. The Foundation serves three constituencies:donors; congregations and pastors; and the Provincial Elder's Committees for Northern and Southern Provinces.Its work is accomplished through the provision of planned giving services, investment and endowment management, and stewardship and capital campaign consulting.At present, the Foundation manages $150 million in assets.The Board of Trustees of the Foundation seeks to fill the position of President/CEO due to the retirement of the founding President/CEO in mid-2017.

Winston – Salem history began in 1753, when the first Moravians in North Carolina settled on 100,000 acres known as the Wachovia Tract.These German-speaking Protestants established the first colonial town in the Carolina.In 1766, the Moravians established Salem, which means "peace," a congregational town and trading center founded to house professional Moravian craftsmen.Their vision of creating a self-sufficient community made Salem a haven for entrepreneurs. Twentieth century businesses, such as R. J. Reynolds Tobacco and the Hanes companies, also shaped Winston-Salem by bringing remarkable wealth to the city and endowing it with an impressive list of institutions and foundations. Role of President and Chief Executive Officer

The President and Chief Executive Officer serves as the leader of the Foundation and is responsible for establishing a vision, consistent with goals and direction set by the Board of Trustees.The President is responsible for the formulation and implementation of policy proposals and the annual budget for the Trustees, the development of operational policies, and the implementation of strategies and programs that further the mission and ministry of the Foundation.

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Leadership:
    • Internal – Provide the vision, direction, inspiration and motivation necessary to ensure the Foundation's success.
    • External – Contribute to the dialogue, vision, and direction of the pertinent global, national, or local communities for the fields of the Foundation's focus areas and the field of philanthropy.
  • Management:
    • Make decisions that result in efficient and effective Foundation functioning

Specific responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following areas and duties:

  • Lead the Foundation's planned giving program through education and encouragement of members;
  • Ensure optimal customer satisfaction among all three constituencies with the goal of constant improvement and relevance of services;
  • Communicate frequently with the constituent groups with the goal of heightened awareness of the Foundation's roles and availability;
  • Oversee campaign services that aid congregations and agencies in meeting ongoing capital needs;
  • Update investment policies and procedures as needed, and maintain constant contact with investment managers, with the goal of ensuring optimal performance;
  • Assist churches and agencies in the development of investment and endowment policies;
  • Manage Foundation staff; prioritize projects and expenditures; and work with the Board of Trustees to maintain the fiduciary integrity and maximum effectiveness of Foundation operations.

Required skills and competencies for the position include:

  • Experience in fundraising for non-profits, with emphasis on planned giving;
  • Faith-based work experience and/or perspective;
  • Strategic vision to take the Foundation to the next level;
  • High levels of energy and creativity, coupled with leadership skills, to guide the Board and direct the work of staff;
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree and/or certifications desirable;
  • Executive-level skills and experience in planning and budgeting;
  • Exemplary skills in public speaking and writing; experience in marketing is desirable; and
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight and weekends.
