Outer Banks Sporting Events, Nags Head NC

Position type: Full-time 40 hours/week

Compensation: $40,000 – $50,000 possibility of bonus based on performance.

Vacation benefits: Vacation Time:  30 days of vacation time to include 10 days sick leave, and specific paid holidays. 



Outer Banks Sporting Events (OBSE) is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that executes sporting events and donates 100% of its net proceeds to the Dare Education Foundation (working to maximize student potential by providing resources to students and teachers in Dare County schools) and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation (providing financial assistance to families in crisis). The mission of OBSE is to organize and promote sports competition and healthy lifestyle choices and provide financial support for needed relief and public education while contributing to the economic health of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We currently produce 5 events each year, the Running of the Leprechauns 5K & 10K, the Flying Pirate Half Marathon, the Outer Banks TRI, and the Towne Bank Outer Banks Marathon. Our annual budget is approx. $900,000.


The EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (ED) provides leadership for the day-to-day operations of the organization and reports to the board of directors. He/she is responsible for strategic planning, event organizing, board relations, staff management, volunteer management, financial operations, sponsor relations and community relations.



Strategic Planning

In partnership with the Board of Directors, create short- and long-term strategic plans for OBSE

Stay abreast of trends and issues that impact the road racing and sports tournament industry

Explore ways to boost revenue through local, regional and national sponsorships.



Set and meet revenue goals and event quality goals that are measurable and achievable.

Establish and record measures of organizational effectiveness meeting the mission

Provide vision and guidance for race marketing, social media strategy and race direction

Chair all event organizing committees and be an ex-officio member of all subcommittees

Monitor laws and legislative changes as they pertain to the nonprofit sector

Meet all nonprofit legal requirements


Board Relations

Send weekly board email update

Set regular board meetings to keep the board informed of operational and budget status

Work with the board to come up with strategic solutions to complex challenges

Support board members in their roles and responsibilities, assist with creating board committees


Staff Management

Effectively supervise staff

Set high performance goals for the staff and review regularly

Ensure sound human resource practices are followed


Financial Management

Prepare and operate within the annual budget, recognizing nonprofit financial accounting and budgeting

Ensure the treasurer is provided with all necessary reports for fiduciary oversight

Develop and execute a fundraising strategy that ensures diversified funding sources are established and maintained


Sponsor and External Relations

Serve as the face of and key spokesperson for OBSE at meetings with the local tourism board, local municipalities, event sponsors and donors as well as at all public events hosted by OBSE

Develop all public presentations

Direct execution of new and existing sponsorship contracts and grants in cooperation with the strategic initiatives coordinator




Ability to read and interpret financial reports

Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action

Ability to understand and follow company policies and procedures and operate under the organizational by-laws

Skills to maintain professional working relationships with all associates, vendors, etc.

Integrity and professionalism



College degree or 3 years job experience including planning, nonprofit finance and management

Establish and maintain volunteer recruitment and retention plans

Proficiency with Race Marketing, Microsoft Office Suite , and QuickBooks.
